Vioxx
Vioxx is a COX-2 inhibitor manufactured by Merck. Vioxx was approved by the FDA in May of 1999, and Merck immediately touted Vioxx as a miracle cure for the pain associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and severe menstrual pain without causing the same gastrointestinal problems as other painkillers.
As a COX-2 inhibitor, Vioxx is gentler on the stomach than other pain relievers. However, studies later revealed that Vioxx increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as the likelihood of cardiovascular events. These studies led to the voluntary recall of Vioxx in September of 2004.
It is estimated that over 10 million Americans took Vioxx while it was on the market, many of whom may have been over prescribed the drug. This has led to several lawsuits, although the majority of lawsuits are yet to come. Lawyers nationwide are organizing class action lawsuits because of injuries resulting from Vioxx prescriptions.
