Duragesic / Fentanyl

Duragesic is an adhesive patch that is applied to skin and delivers a steady dose of fentanyl. Fentanyl is a powerful painkiller medication. Duragesic is administered to patients suffering chronic, debilitating pain.

In April 2004, Janssen Pharmaceutical Products, the manufacturer of Duragesic, issued a recall for defective patches. The recall applies to specific lots of the 75mcg strength Duragesic patches. These Duragesic patches have a faulty seal that permits full strength fentanyl to leak from the patch.

The recall pertains to lot numbers:

NDC no. 50458-035-05
Lot Control nos. 0327192, 0327193, 0327294, 0327295, and 0330362

It is very difficult, if not impossible, for patient to notice a defect or leak in their Duragesic patch. A defective Duragesic patch can lead to exposure to a fentanyl overdose and cause:

  • Seizures
  • Extreme lethargy
  • Slow breathing
  • Sedation
  • Severe nausea
  • Respiratory failure
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Coma
  • Death
