Accutane

Accutane is an oral drug used to treat severe nodular acne. Nodular acne is an extreme form of acne that can lead to lesions and permanent scarring. Nodular acne does not respond to traditional acne medication and therefore patients are typically prescribed Accutane.

Accutane is a synthetic form of vitamin A that dries up the oils that clog pores. If left untreated, this can lead to acne or infections. However, Accutane has been shown to cause suicidal depression, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, birth defects, vision and hearing problems, liver and kidney damage, and heart problems. Click here for more information on these side effects.

Upon learning of these side effects, the FDA has created a national Accutane registry. This registry serves as a list of every patient that have ever been given Accutane, as well as prohibiting pregnant women from being prescribed Accutane.

Millions of Americans have been prescribed Accutane and may be unaware of the long-term effects of the drug.
